Selected Elevations

Palmer Park (Carrollton @ Claiborne): -1.110 below sea level

Carrollton between Freret & Zimple: 2.9 feet above sea level

Lowerline @ Cohn: 3.63 feet above sea level

Claiborne @ Palmer: -3.130 below sea level (I swam neck-high for blocks in this area during flooding in junior high ca. 1976-78)

Tulane University: -2 feet below sea level (I swam here, too, behind the married student dorms during flooding, as a small kid, early 1970s. Ants make rafts and float. Parents, keep your kids out of stormwaters, as they can be sucked down the sewers and die!)

Spanish Fort: 10.210 feet above sea level. (I think that's the chimney top itself, not the ground beneath it.)

Basic Hurricane Safety Tips

From Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) http://www.fema.gov/hazards/hurricanes/

Not a Ham Operator? You can help!

If you have a home weather station, find out how to join the Weather Volunteer Observers Network here.

If you can give blood or make cash donations, contact your local Red Cross chapter. You also can donate online or call 1-800-HELP-NOW .

DO NOT offer goods, food, etc. on a freelance basis. This slows down the supply chain for ALL aid going into a disaster area. Coordinate any large-scale donations through your local Red Cross. Monitor local and national news outlets for specific needs. Authorities there will let you know what is of use and what is not.

Believe the power

For those who think they've been though hurricanes before, meet history repeating itself. FYI, when Camille made LANDFALL, the pressure was not as low as Katrina's is now still mid-Gulf. That means this will be far worse. Note for those inland: Weather Channel predicts HURRICANE FORCE WINDS AS FAR NORTH AS I-20.

EVACUATION IS MANDATORY. If you cannot evacuate the city for whatever reason, Mayor Ray Nagin says that you should report to the Superdome with sleeping gear, prescription medications, and food and water for 3-5 days. DO NOT bring loads of personal items. You also should consider bringing a flashlight and spare batteries, a personal first aid kit (at least Band-Aids and disinfectant), and a small battery- or crank-powered radio.

KD5QEL Hurricane Info

This is Robin KD5QEL 's Hurricane Information Blog. I am a born-and-raised native New Orleanian who remembers Camille. This blog is meant as a web-based information source ONLY. Your first point of contact in an emergency is 911.

My callsign indicates Louisiana, but QTH is Jonesboro, GA. LAT 33.572911 N -084. 377909 W or 33:34:22.480N 84:22:40.472W .

My station is NOT OPERATIONAL other than on weak 2m at this time, but I expect to go up on other bands within 24 hours. This QTH tends to lose power with seasonal thunderstorms.
